I can still hear the gravel roar under the Grand Fury Dodge Fury tires at my grandparents’ house in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. I remember how nice the house suited them and my great-grandmother, who lived with them, and how things were in their homes. In a simpler time, homes are smaller and less complex, so are the lives of people whose houses are sheltered. They are very comfortable on their simple farm. The house is not a traditional house, but unlike other houses in their neighborhood. It’s small, but spacious, and has character. Knowing my Grandfather, I’m sure he’s shopping for the best price on the road, but he also knows the construction and makes himself a solid quality building material.

When as an architect, I began to think seriously about home design, I wondered how the house became a place to suit them. I like to think that a quiet little guesthouse is designed and built with heart and workmanship by someone who has a good idea of the kind of family who might want to live there. Our lives are now more varied and complex, and our home designs should support and reflect that. Opportunities for architectural discovery in home design are currently unlimited – new materials, products, and construction techniques are continuously being introduced, and new technologies are impacted. Unlike the days before when the style of history mastered the design of the house, our choices are now wide open. We are free to interpret the style, or create our own desires to satisfy our aesthetic desires.

But all these available design tools are rarely used to create printed homes for the lives of their owners. Instead, home buyers find themselves having to choose from several floor plans designed to appeal to a vast market, and then struggle to give personality and character only with paint, carpets, and furniture. We try to make our “our” home with features and decorations and never assume that it is the architecture design itself that brings home life. We forget what is possible and ends with another house and not a home.

Designing and building a new home is an opportunity to create something new, something unique, something individual like you. We are working on several houses that oppose style categorization because of their inspiration, their “style” comes from life led by the owner. The house is built with character as the main construction material – architecture and “decoration” can not be separated.

These homes are so much more than just the number of bedrooms and the size of the floor plan – they are the ones you go back to look over and over again and think, “Wow, there’s something about the house I love.” What you love about those houses is the result of the owner who has been instrumental in creating the design from the beginning. They realize that the house is made of life, love, memory, hope, and space – not the living room, the crown mold, and the curtains.

Our conversation with this client does not begin with, “how many bedrooms do you need?” or “how much house do you want?” they start with “what is your dream and how you want to live?”. Discussions, and designs that evolved from them, were a truly distinctive home.

Good home design brings people together in a fun way. It provides the family as a whole, and for the privacy of each individual. Good design does all these things, and it begins by taking the time to ask clients about the details of their everyday life. What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning-head straight to the shower or to the coffee maker? Do the kids eat breakfast at the table or do they pick up a pop-tart on their way out the door? A client of mine who recently described her family’s eating style as “hit-and-run”. The little words tell a lot about his kitchen design requirements – more than just finding a cabinet catalog with him.

We spent hours talking to our clients before one line was withdrawn. To make a little effort to examine their family’s personality is to rob the benefits of custom house design. Lifestyle changes from generation to generation, and homes also have to change. However, most of the houses built today are a bit more than the latest version of the 300-year-old Colonial design. Incredibly, we are still building formal homes and dining rooms for families who never use them. Better homes and better life experiences are the result when clients and Architects work together to examine the uniqueness of a client’s lifestyle and how to inform and mold home designs.

My grandparents moved south to retire years ago, leaving the old house for the next family. I wonder if it suits the new owners and also my grandparents, or do they have to make changes to accommodate their unique lifestyle? I hope they have not opened the driveway yet.
